In 2010 we celebrated our 35th year serving families and children in the community.
Child Care Solutions began operation as the Onondaga County Child Care Council in 1975. The agency was created as the result of a grassroots campaign to establish an independent, community-based, not-for-profit organization to coordinate and support child care in Onondaga County. The Child Care Council opened its doors in downtown Syracuse in 1976 with a staff of three led by Executive Director, Mary Lou Rubenstein. The new organization provided coordination and support for child care services through community education, provider training programs, advocacy and information and referral services for parents.
In 1978 the Child Care Council moved to the former Sumner School on the City's eastside, a building housing multiple agencies serving children and families. Under Executive Directors Suzanne Vaughn and Beth Rougeux, the Council expanded its services in the 80's, working with local businesses to help meet employee child care needs and supporting the expansion of school-age child care. The Child Care Council became a United Way funded agency in 1989 and also qualified for NY State funding as a Child Care Resource & Referral agency.
Under the leadership of current Executive Director Peggy Liuzzi, the Child Care Council became a sponsor for the federally funded Child & Adult Care Food Program in 1993 and, a year later, moved to East Genesee Street to accommodate growing provider training and education programs.
In 1998 the Child Care Council became the School-Age Child Care Registrar responsible for the regulatory oversight of state-registered school-age child care programs. That responsibility expanded in 2003 to include registered family child care homes. The Council also became the lead agency of the state-funded regional Infant Toddler Resource Center serving Onondaga and 13 neighboring counties.
In December of 2004 the agency experienced a major transition, moving to a larger location at 6724 Thompson Road and adopting a new name - Child Care Solutions. Both decisions were made as a result of our strategic planning process and embodied our commitment to our purpose, our community and our future. Today our organization has grown to 36 staff members and offers an expanded menu of programs that carry out the same core mission with which we began in 1975.
